Special Prize (out of 6) from 600 entries in the first stage of the open International Design Competition for the theater complex in the historical city of Nara.

The program included Large multipurpose Theatre Hall with 2000 seats, Music Hall with 500 seats and Small Theatre with 100 seats. The competition was conducted in two stages.

Five proposals were selected as a result of the first, open stage.

The second stage was a closed competition in which five leading, active architects at the time from several countries were invited to compete together with the five proposals chosen in the first stage.

The five invited architects were: Arata Isozaki, Tadao Ando, Mario Botta, Hans Hollein and Christian de Portzamparc.

The international jury led by Kisho Kurokawa included Kazuo Shinohara, Hiroshi Hara, James Stirling, Richard Meier and Vittorio Magnano Lampugnani selected unanimously project by Arata Isozaki as the wining design.
